Encrypted sync

Conversation sync keeps every device on the same page: close the laptop, pick up the conversation on your phone. Everything is encrypted on your device before it leaves. Olace cannot read your conversations.

How it works

Your devices share a master key that never reaches Olace in usable form. Olace's servers store only wrapped keys and ciphertext. Encrypted sync is available on paid plans; see Plans & credits.

Set it up

When you enable sync, Olace asks you to:

1. Set a Sync PIN. A 6-digit PIN that unlocks your synced chats on new devices.
2. Save your Recovery Key. Shown once. Usually you will unlock with your PIN or a trusted device; the Recovery Key is the fallback if you lose both. Save it somewhere safe.

You can choose Set up later, but until then new devices cannot decrypt your history.

Unlock a new device

A new device offers three ways in, and you can always pick Try another way:

• PIN. Enter your 6-digit Sync PIN.
• Trusted device. Approve from a device that already has your key, then tap the same number on both screens to confirm it is really you.
• Recovery Key. Enter the key you saved during setup.

On the web

In the web app your key stays in memory for the browser session. When the session ends, unlock again with your PIN. Conversations are kept encrypted in the browser database the whole time.

If your plan lapses

Sync pauses rather than disappearing: your encrypted data stays safe for 60 days, and resuming a paid plan picks up where it left off.
